The DAO
The DAO, which was introduced in 2016 on the Ethereum blockchain, operated as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) focused on being an investor-directed cryptocurrency venture capital fund. Despite a successful initial token sale that raised $150 million USD worth of ether (ETH), the project experienced a significant hack that resulted in the loss of a substantial amount of ETH funds. This event triggered a significant split within the Ethereum community, leading to a hard fork that resulted in the creation of two distinct blockchains, Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC).
