Smishing
Smishing is a variation of a phishing attack where misleading SMS or text messages are used to deceive targets into sharing sensitive information or access. The text messages in a smishing attack often contain malicious links or fraudulent customer support or authoritative phone numbers intended for the target to click on or call. Responding to this call to action (CTA) typically triggers compromising activities, leading to the disclosure of sensitive information, such as Social Security Numbers or credit card details, or even loss of access to the target’s devices.
