Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary global time standard used for regulating time and clocks worldwide. UTC is based on highly precise atomic clocks in conjunction with the Earth’s rotation. It remains within one second of mean solar time at 0° longitude and does not account for daylight saving time adjustments. Implemented on January 1, 1960, UTC replaced Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Investors rely on UTC as a universal reference point to determine the opening and closing times of various stock markets worldwide.
